CADCAM is a new technology for orthopaedics... False !

At exhibitions, or on publicity leaflets, CADCAM for orthopaedics is often characterised as being a “new technology”, but honestly, today this is no longer true. Over the last 15 years, CAD/CAM has been experimented worldwide by ortho-prosthesists. After a long test period, this technology has seen significant progress and today its reliability and productivity is no longer an issue.
The advantages obtained with CADCAM are numerous: first, concerning productivity, CAD/CAM reduces the time required to execute certain key steps of the manufacturing process, in particular when a scanner is used to take measurements or when 3D is used to design the device. It also automates other tasks, such as milling the positive or drawing the device’s trim lines. This time saving enables ortho-prosthesists to focus their attention on their work and their relationship with the patient.
Another major advantage: CAD/CAM plays a key role in satisfying the patient. Indeed, many patients find making plaster moulds stressful, some patients even find this an ordeal. The Rodin4D O&P Scan allows measurements to be taken rapidly (in less than 3 minutes), there is no contact with the patient and it is totally painless. Measurements can be taken on newborn babies or bedridden patients without any problem. What’s more, this scanner can digitise a previous plaster mould or device, which may be useful in certain situations. Finally, measurements taken with this scanner are accurate to within +/- 1 mm.
To finish, CAD/CAM provides many improvements to help manage patient files and the follow-up of their treatment. The R4D CADCAM software provides access to each patient’s file including their digitisation and correction history. This file can also include all photographs and X-rays associated with this patient. As such, it is easy to re-use a previous form or compare progress when correcting a pathology.
Only large orthopaedic companies can afford CAD/CAM... False !
Another widely spread but false idea is that CAD/CAM is reserved for major groups or large orthopaedic companies. It is true that a complete CAD/CAM solution including a scanner, rectification software and a machine-tool is a major investment whose return is based on the duration of use, the volume produced and that the solution is not necessarily suitable for all organisations. Today, the offers proposed by Rodin4D allow all types of companies to reap the benefits of CAD/CAM at a lower cost. As such, it is possible to work without the 3D scanner by using a traditional method to take measurements and then enter the measurements into the 3D forms personalised libraries provided in the R4D CAD/CAM software. It is also possible to rent the R4D CADCAM software and sub-contract milling the positive or manufacturing the device at a Rodin4D Central Production Centre. Finally, depending on the volumes you require to mill, it is possible to choose between a bi-annual fee and a unity payment.
CADCAM standardises the ortho-prosthesist's know-how... False !
Finally, another assumption concerning CADCAM is to think that the computerisation of certain processes used to make orthopaedic devices will standardise them. This is the same as believing that two ortho-prosthesists equipped with the same CADCAM system will achieve exactly the same result. We encounter this erroneous assumption each year during our user days. Orthopaedic rectification is an art which is specific to each practitioner, and whether it is performed manually or virtually changes nothing. With Rodin4D, there are a thousand ways to rectify a scoliosis and each orthoprosthesist has his own method and habits.
